Thirteen Things I Am Going To Do Today

(which, incidentally, is more than the seven that should be on my list as Tink pointed out).

1. Give Rusty and Roxie a bath. Millie needs a bath, too, but I'm not sure I am brave enough to try that without help. She's three times bigger than she was the last time we wrestled and I almost lost. (Yes, they are wearing doggie diapers. They don't use them per se, but if they don't have them on they'll pee on the floor. They're special like that.)

2. Catch up on laundry. I'm off to a good start. I've got two loads done and four to go.

3. I'll finish storing my dahlia bulbs now that I have more sawdust.

4. Have you seen Julie & Julia? If you haven't, you should. Today I will make my October menu. Okay, some of my October menu. My son, Nick, loves to bake so we are going to do our own little cooking project. He's a senior and it just seems like a neat memory to have. Anyhow, I will cook the dinner and he will be in charge of the dessert each day of October. I'll share the details when I get them written down. Oh, and I suppose I should probably tell the kid.

5. I am going to empty out the hat/glove/scarf drawers. I'll sort what I know and leave the rest for the kids to grab out of a basket. All summer things were just randomly thrown in and it's a mess!

6. I'm going to finish cleaning and organizing my plant room. The walls aren't built around this room yet so I have to look at it all day long. Driving me nuts. I started the other day so I'm half way done.

7. Of course, I'll go and feed my girls (and guys) and take care of Daisy.

8. I'm going to water all my house plants. The 20-some Impatiens I dug up and brought in the house are in desperate need of care.

9. I am going to write out my grocery list so I can shop tomorrow for at least the first week of our menu.

10. I will finish blowing the leaves out of the yard. Mother Nature has blessed me with a few more no-snow days. I need to quite pushing my luck. I did some last night, but then it got dark.

11. I will clean Nick and Elijah's rooms. They are both spending the night out so it's my chance to get in there and toss stuff.

12. Tonight I'd like to watch our Netflix movie that has been sitting here for three days.

13. I need to pack in firewood. I haven't had a fire in days because there isn't any wood in the house. The wood is right outside the door. I'm being lazy. Time to buck up.

Okay....so I invite you to check back tomorrow for an update on my successes and failures. Will more than 7 items on my to-do list give me a mental strain? Probably.

Thursday Thirteen

Have a list of 13 things you want to share? Go here!
Thirteen things I should really do tomorrow:
1. Shovel the sidewalk and stairs. We are supposed to get 2-6 inches of new snow depending on where you are. I think I've already got 3 or so.
2. Bake cookies. I picked up peanut butter chips, peppermint chips and creme de mint chips tonight at the store. Lots of cookies!
3. Catch up the laundry. Not sure what the deal is, but I'm several loads behind.
4. Clean out my truck. So many shoes/coats/boats/toys/clothes are making it hard to find a seat. And there are nine!
5. Take the bed frame out of Lucas' room. Then it will be empty, we can pull up the carpet, finish up the trim, re-carpet and it will be all done and ready to decorate. Yea!
6. Being preparation for the quilt I'm making someone for Christmas. Time will run out before I know it.
7. Pull out my flannel and find the pajama pattern. We were going to buy some pajamas for the girls tonight. They wanted $36 for a shirt and pants. I don't think so!
8. Call about ordering school photos for Nick. He neglected to bring home the form and now I need to see if I can still order them.
9. Work on hockey cd's. I finished burning 36 cd's with 2523 photos for the basketball parents and handed them out at the banquet. Now I've edited 2007 photos from a past hockey team and will give those photos to the parents. I should have done this two years ago, and the guilt rides on my shoulders all the time. I will finish them this week!
10. Bathe four of the dogs. They don't smell so great.
11. Start ripping apart the old kitchen. Looking forward to having a big bonfire with the cabinets. They are so not worth saving.
12. Fill the wild bird feeder. I bet they ran out of seed awhile ago.
13. Take time to soak my feet. My feet are so dry, cracked, calloused and nasty. I've got to start taking some time for myself.
Check back tomorrow and I'll let you know if I actually did anything on this list! :)

Thursday Thirteen

*edited to say...I did this last night and posted four minutes before the "scheduled outage". Apparently, it didn't post*

My original 13 is below, but I thought I'd do a quick one on the theme prompt "13 Things I Love About My Wedding".

1. My husband to be. I cannot describe the feeling I had looking into his eyes. Like we always say....if we only would have met years ago....

2. I loved that we held our two children together during the ceremony. That wasn't intended, but they freaked out with all the people and started to cry. Homer held Lucas and I held Olivia as we exchanged vows.

3. The weather was awesome. The heavens shone brightly on us.

4. Aunt Linda performed the ceremony. That added meaning to it all.

5. Debbi was at my side. I can't think of another woman who has done more for me over the years and been a better friend.

6. So many took the time out of their busy summer lives to come by and wish us well. It meant so much.

7. That the wedding was more about the kids than us...swimming, wiffle ball...they even had friends spend the night...on my wedding night. (We stayed home).

8. I loved that we didn't have to spend a fortune. Our wedding wasn't about the dress or rings or reception or any of that....it was about joining two families into one. All the other little details really didn't matter. Homer, myself and our eight children were the focus.

9. I loved that we got married at home, in our front yard that we worked so hard to create. It was the perfect back drop.

10. I loved the way several friends jumped in at the last minute and helped with things I never got around to doing (like ordering a cake...Kris made sure I had one!).

11. It meant so much that Homer's family was here with us...Mom, Dad, Aunts, Uncles...family is the only thing that matters.

12. I loved that no one was hurt. I can't say the same for animals (that goes out to the boys who threw firecrackers in the pond and killed the fish...I know who you are!).

13. My husband to be. I realize that I mentioned how much I loved him in #1, but really he is the beginning and the end. We are working on the middle.

(It's 1:10am...I'm tired. I will change this to add a photo, but if you are here before I do that I guess you'll just have to come back to see it! :)

Thursday Thirteen

I'm going with the "summery/cheerful" Thursday Thirteen badge because I know eventually those days will come.

I'm going to share 13 things on my mind because I didn't know about the "wedding post prompt" until after I was done. I'm always a day late and a dollar short!

1. I miss my husband. He's been away for 14 days. It took me 35 years to meet that wonderful man, and I want to be selfish and spend every waking (and sleeping) moment together. One never really knows how much time we have left on this earth. I don't want to lose time together.

2. I feel my blogging days slipping away. Ack! I love Blogger. It brings me great joy to check in with my friends and see how things are in their world. The reality is my computer is too damn slow, I am home raising five children by myself, summer is coming (really, it is) and I'm so busy. I have so many, many things to do and when I have to sit and WAIT so long for every page to load, I just see my blogging days fading.....

3. Olivia told me that when she stands on her tippy-toes she is 13. Oh, my sweet, beautiful, darling four-year old....soon enough you will be 13. Please, don't stand on your tippy-toes anymore.

4. It's cold. It spit snow at me today. I'm pissed.

5. I found some of our mail in the melting snow bank. I have a stellar post man. Really.

6. Did you know they have $10 wine tastings in Florida? With 70 wines to sample? I'm moving.

7. You don't have to have a large dog to have them poop a lot.

8. I made 10 (not-very-fancy) scrapbook pages today. Last year I wanted to complete one page per day. I failed in a big way. Thought I'd try again. 10/104 I'm already failing.

9. If you are one of those optimistic kind of people that is going to tell me "you have 10 more pages than you started with" don't bother. I'm a pessimist and you don't want to hear my response to your joyful positiveness.

10. Did I mention that it sucks the love of my life is gone? It sucks the love of my life is gone.

11. There are 25 school days left! (insert back flip here). I hate getting up in the morning. I hate dealing with the public school system. In fact, I'm not even sure I really like people much. I would love my kids to be home with me every day, but they are too social for that (read as...our grades suck, but we have a lot of friends). If I had a big do-over I would have home-schooled every one of them (and they would not have been nerds...I'm way to cool for that!). Yipee to no more school!

12. This is a really long list and you must really be a good friend to me if you are still reading it. Truth is I have a lot on my mind and could write 113 things instead of 13!

13. I just connected with my very best childhood friend on Facebook. I'm not even sure I like Facebook, but now she is back in my life so that makes it a good thing. I've known her since I was five, but lost touch when we graduated. I always kept a special spot in my heart for her all these years, and I'm so glad she's back in it. I just wished we wouldn't have missed out on 24 years together.

I'll stop now even though my brain is still full. Thanks for sticking it out! :) What's on your mind?

Thursday Thirteen

Thursday Thirteen is back at a new site...check it out!

Thirteen stresses and joys around the White House....

1. Nick is a joy. He's funny. He's smart. He's a talker. I really like hanging out with him.

2. Nick is a big giant stress. He has been to the ER more than the other four children combined. He's got that whole "Play hard or die trying" thing going on.

See the huge lump and swelling on the outside of the foot? Skateboarding. He can't put weight on it at all. They tell us is is not broken, but since he can't stand he was sent home in a splint with crutches. (Oh, and he still can't stand this morning).

3. Emily, Olivia and Lucas are some of the joys of my life.
4. Being locked in a teeny tiny exam room with them was more stress than I can handle. You think they look sweet? Oh, you should have seen the action before and after this shot.

5. Lucas was my planting helper this morning. It was a joy having his little hands hand me the pots and ask so many questions about the "tiny seeds".

6. The fact that it is April 10th and most of my seeds aren't planted yet has me completely stressed out. All my visions of a lush garden in June have faded, and the best I can hope for is beauty in July. Unless we have another crappy summer of no sun and then it will never happen.
7. Lucas and I actually got a few things planted before he insisted on going downstairs. This brings me great joy. We've added:
23 Shock Wave Ivory Petunia
29 Tidal Wave Hot Pink Petunia
92 Crackerjack Marigold
24 Giant Marigold
30 Scarlet Starlet Marigold
8. I'm not sure if it brings me great joy that the heater is thawing my dirt or if it brings me great stress that I have to use a space heater to scrape up a little dirt to plant.

9. The photo does not express the danger involved with every trip to the upstairs. That is a skinny little path of 3-inch thick ice. Not a chance we can chip it away and it's too shaded during the day to do much melting. The kids take the high road on the hill, but I can't get down the other side without killing myself so I gingerly slink across the ice. I have to take this path over and over all day long as it is the only access to the upstairs...bedrooms, laundry room, plant room. Our "inside stairs" aren't constructed yet. This is where I will go back and forth hauling the dirt once it is thawed. This is STRESSFUL!

10. Another stress is the iceberg I have to cross to get to the thawing pile of dirt. I HATE this time of year. I have to be so careful. If I hit the ground my back/hips go out and then I'm done for. I'm not 20 anymore!

11. Believe-it-or-not this bundle of energy is a joy. He loves me. A lot. His unconditional love feels good. I feel just horrible that he is chained outside, but unfortunately he is shedding like no other. My hubby has bad asthma and the two don't mix so good. He's plenty warm enough, but he gets lonely. (The dog, not my husband).

12. The grey skies raining/snowing on me this morning are a big giant stress. As long as the cool temperatures continue the ice won't go away.

13. This man brings me great joy, but right now I am feeling a huge amount of stress. This is day eight of him being far, far away leaving me to raise five kids, six dogs, one sheep and a goose all by myself. Not that I'm not used to doing this all alone....I spent most of my first marriage with my husband gone working and it happens a lot now, too....but it still doesn't mean that it isn't stressful. I can handle it. I don't like it. I miss him. (I look pregnant is this photo. I'm not. It was New Year's Eve and way cold out. That's massive layers of clothing and I was still cold).

I am a whiner. I have way more stresses than joys listed. As Nick would say, "That's crap". I'm out the door to pick up Mr. Gimpy from school (early outs for testing). I'll see what I can do about finding more joy in my day to share with you.
Anything bringing you great joy or a little stress?

Thursday Thirteen

(Click above to participate!)

Thirteen things I've heard around the house this week....

1. Cody: "I don't want anything for Christmas BUT a boat ($350)." That's a big BUT Mr-I-just-bought-you-a-$500-dog-as-an-early-Christmas-present-that-you-totally-ignore.

2. You got detention in detention? Elijah: [silent] I can't believe you got detention in detention. What kind of person gets in trouble in detention? You should be embarrassed. Really. Detention in detention....(walks off muttering to self).

3. I told you to do the dishes. Why didn't you do what you were told? Nick: "Because I don't like doing dishes." Right. Ya. Good answer [insert clapping wildly like they do on the stupid game show]. I can't imagine what I was thinking??

4. Olivia: "Mom, I love you." I hear that multiple times in the day for no reason except for the fact that she loves me. Can I keep her four forever?

5. Lucas: "Scooby Doo!" "Scooby Doo!" "I want Scooby Doo!" Repeated over and over and over again until I put the movie on or he gets distracted (which takes awhile).

6. Animals: "Baaa! Quack! Cluck! Cock-a-doodle-doo! Honk! A bark, yip and a woof!" All translates into "Feed Me".

7. 30 seconds after being told he is grounded from the phone...Elijah: "Can I call Nelson?" Ahh, no. Not sure what part of -you are grounded from the phone- he didn't understand. I'll have to work on speaking clearly.

8. Nick: "Mom, watch this." At this point he balances something on his nose or shows me how he glued together 14 items to make a really cool tower or something similarly assine to delay doing homework. Anything to not do homework (as evidenced by his 3 D's!).

9. Do you have any homework? Cody: "No." Same answer everyday yet he has 2 D's and an F. At least he's consistent. There are worse things he could be.

10. Lucas: "Debbi's" "Deeebbbbiiii's" "Debbbbiiiii's" Over and over and over because he wants to go to Grandma Debbi's. He'd live there if he could.

11. Olivia: "Mom, I want to go to Debbi's." Feeding of her brother....believe me, if I could take you there, I would!

12. Husband has flown off to Kodiak to work. Mr. White: "Did you paint the floor yet?" Hello. I am home, alone, with six kids. No, I have not painted the floor yet. I may never paint the floor.

13. Let's take a nap. Please. Can we take a nap? Just a little nap. Come on, let's take a nap. [insert big time pleading]. Wee People: "No." No matter how much I beg and plead it's always the same answer. Can I stomp my feet and shout No Fair?

(Did you know it's Thursday? THURSDAY! Wasn't it just Monday? I need my week back. Now! And someone bring me some creamer. My coffee tastes like crap!)

Thursday Thirteen

( Click the photo to check out more Thursday Thirteeners!)

Thirteen things I learned this week (in no particular order):

1. If a big bus being directed by idiots in orange vests through an area it won't fit hits your car and the idiots in the orange vests who don't want to lose their jobs vouches for the idiot bus driver who doesn't want to lose his job the bus company will not pay for your damages. It becomes a driver-driver situation, and now I am stuck with a dent I have to pay for because they lied to save their ass. Nice.

2. I am obsessed with the weather. What it was, what it is going to be, what it is now. I like to complain about the cold and I can't do that unless I'm paying attention. Mr. White found me a thermometer. I'm pretty excited about it!

3. If a dog drinks a lot of water it will pee a lot on your floor.

4. A two-year old boy will eat a lot of toast if you let him.

5. Ringworm is not really worms, it's a skin fungus. It's contagious. It can get really bad. Cody caught a mild case at wrestling, and won't be able to wrestle at Regionals this weekend. If I catch it I will wig out.

6. Internet is more addicting than drugs. When I was without Internet for about 15 hours I had major withdrawals.

7. Just when you think you have blown the last bit of gunky yellow snot out of your head your body makes more. It's efficient like that.

8. Painting really isn't as much fun as I hoped it would be.

9. Christmas presents do not buy themselves. Nor do they wrap themselves. Nor do they get to the post office all by themselves. There may be no Christmas this year.

10. Just when you think your child couldn't be anymore wrapped up in themselves thinking the world revolves around their needs, they demand more. (spoiled brats!)

11. Sharing your King size bed with your children doesn't mean you'll have room to sleep comfortably. It means they will sleep sideways and kick you in the face!

12. If you leave the dishes on the counter long enough no one in the house will wash them. They will just stink.

13. It was -20 and I didn't want to hang up lights outside. It is now +20 and I still don't want to hang lights outside. Gaining 40 degrees isn't enough to make me want to go outside.

So....what did you learn this week?

Thursday Thirteen: Dreadful

Thirteen Things That Make This Holiday Season Dreadful....

1. Telling the boys they won't be able to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with me and do the things they planned because it is my ex-husband's year and he's taking them.

2. Dealing with their reaction and comforting them after I tell them. I have to use words the law requires instead of what's in my heart. My heart wants them to make their own choices, but my words will tell them they don't get a choice.

3. Spending Thanksgiving watching football without the boys. They love football. They play football. We have fun watching games together. My ex doesn't watch football. The whole game I'll be thinking of them.

4. Eating Thanksgiving dinner without my boys. They are picky eaters and I cook just for them rather than make them eat foods they don't like. The food isn't going to taste as good this year.

5. Putting up the Christmas tree is going to suck. Don't even know where to put it...upstairs where it is crowded or downstairs where we are working. I don't even want to have one.

6. Trying to decide when we are going to have Christmas since my boys can't be here. I don't even want to talk about it to make the decision. The boys and I are very close and just thinking about not being together makes me cry.

7. This is the first year in five years step-daughter Sydney won't spend Christmas with us. It makes me sad that it will make my husband sad. He's dealt with so much turmoil from his wicked ex-wife. I'd just want him to be happy.

8. It's cold. Like -20 cold. If the cold persists it will mess up snowboarding for the boys. For the first time in years they aren't travelling for hockey during the holidays and can actually go snowboarding, and the cold is going to ruin that.

9. Christmas is a Thursday which means my husband will have to work Wednesday and Friday. That is dreadful. He works too much.

10. Being depressed is dreadful. Thanksgiving is about family and without family there isn't Thanksgiving so that is depressing. Christmas not being Christmas is depressing. My boys being in turmoil is depressing. I want to crawl under the covers and wallow in my depression.

11. My shopping isn't started. That's dreadful and stressful!

12. The thought of not being in the livingroom downstairs by Christmas (and more importantly Elijah's birthday) is dreadful. Elijah and I have planned such a cool party, but it all hinges on the livingroom.

13. Christmas cards. Completely dreadful because I haven't started them. Haven't even decided what to send. I still have 128 wallet sized photos to cut out and label to put in the cards. Geez...I think I sent them last year AFTER Christmas. I was hoping to do better this year.

I hope the holidays aren't dreadful for you this year. Join the Thursday Thirteen by going here!

Thursday Thirteen: 13 Scenarios That Make Me Say Why?

(Click the above link to see more 13 lists!)

13 Scenarios That Make Me Say Why? :

1. Let's say you are a school bus driver. It's 8:40am and -10 degrees outside. You see a mother and son rushing down the front steps waving wildly for you to stop yet you drive on by leaving the boy standing. Why?

2. Let's say you are a school bus driver. It's 4:15pm and you are about to leave the school to take the children home. You open your bus door to tell a child they can't get on your bus and they should go get on bus 37. Bus 37 stops 8 miles from this child's home. You are this child's bus. You tell your boss the child was late for the bus and therefore missed it. You took the time to open your door and talk to this child to send him away yet you couldn't let him walk up two steps. Why?

3. A little dachshund goes outside to do her business. Granted it's cold, but it is outside. The proper place to do your business. A little dachshund (actually five) comes back inside and poos on the floor. Why?

4. You are a teenager who has lived in the same home with the same laundry room with the same laundry baskets for over four years. For four years your mother has nagged at you to sort your clothes into the right baskets yet you still stand in the doorway and toss the clothes in all directions. Why?

5. I do not like to talk on the phone. Ever. Let's say you are a teenager in my home and I say, "Don't answer the phone unless it is for you" (Caller ID is a wonderful thing). You answer the phone. The caller wants me. You hold the phone out to me with your deer-in-the-headlights look like I'm going to take it. Why?

6. There is a force-field over my garbage that causes trash to hit the floor rather than go in. Why?

7. Let's say you are a teenager in my home and 4632 times I have told you to rinse out your cereal bowl when you are done, but you don't. Why?

8. Under no circumstances is anyone to be rummaging through my desk. Everyday someone rummages through my desk. Why?

9. You are a teenager in my home who is not allowed to have food in his room. You take food in your room everyday. Why?

10. I over volunteer when I actually (finally) have the opportunity to just sit on my fat arse and be lazy. Why?

11. You are my husband. We have a conversation (I talk, you listen). I tell you what time and where the (insert sporting activity) is. When I am done telling you, you ask me what time and where. Why?

12. You are my husband and you wonder why I am pissed repeating what I just told you. Why?

13. It is 9:00am. I have to be at the school at 3:15pm. I will be late. Why?

Thursday Thirteen: 13 Photos from Wednesday

After you are finished visit the other thirteeners here!

I do not like to leave my house. Really. I'd stay home all day every day if I could. I don't think I was always like this, but I sure am now. If I can find a reason to put something off until another day I will. Well, eye appointments are not something we can skip. So my Wednesday was interrupted...

1) Olivia and Lucas playing Legos at the eye doctors office...
2) The first machine Olivia had to go to....after waiting about 45 minutes...

3) This is the dreaded prize box. Last visit Lucas (being 2) quickly picked an item. Then he saw the cars. He is OBSESSED with cars. That lady wouldn't let him take one. A 10 cent trinket...she says, "no, only one per patient". (She must not have children). Holy Hell! Lucas went into the biggest two-year old tantrum. He did not understand why he couldn't have a piece-of-crap plastic car. I do not want to hear all the "teach your child boundaries" "he can't have what he wants" "blah, blah, blah" BS. He is TWO! He didn't get it, and he screamed. And I wrestled with him. It was a horrible 15-20 minutes for EVERYONE in the waiting room. Why? To teach him a lesson? He's two for Pete's sake! So today, just as soon as Olivia went to pick a "prize for being good", I snatched a car and give it to Lucas. Would you believe that woman started to tell me they are for the patients only. I walked off. At that point it had been an hour with toddlers in an eye clinic. Enough said.

4) Here's Olivia sitting in the chair like she's going to be a big girl. NOT! First of all, I have to sit in the chair and hold her. That isn't even the point. Today, she completely decided to not cooperate. (I think it was the long wait). She covered her eyes, refused to let the doctor look at her, and she wouldn't look at the charts. I am sure I will be billed several hundred dollars for that and I was sent home not feeling any better about her "bad" eye. (I had to ask him for a patch because progress wasn't being made!).

5) Lucas wanted to sit in the big chair, too.....

6) View from the chair....Veggie Tales. I do not like talking vegetables!

7) Olivia has the camera now!

8) After 1 1/2 hours at the eye doctor (about 10 actually with the doctor) we met dad at Sam's Sourdough Cafe for lunch.

9) Typical two-year old tantrum. The last time we went to lunch it was just like this and I told Mr. White I wasn't ever going to a restaurant with Wee Two again. Apparently, I forgot. Mr. White was kind enough to point out that I forgot...."I thought you weren't going to go out to eat with Lucas again". Ya, that helped.

10) A perfect angel as always.

11) Club Sandwiches and some reindeer sausage. (I love it...and had to have it even if it is expensive!)
12) There they are in the doggie pen...cold and wanting to come back in the house!

13) Daisy and Billy joined by one of the hens for evening feeding.

Thursday Thirteen: 13 Halloween Costumes

13 Halloween costumes from the past few years...

1. 2002....Elijah as a ghoul.

2. 2002...Nick as a devil.

So much more realistic with red eyes!

3. 2002...Emily as a little witch.

For trick-or-treating Elijah traded in the mask for face paint.

Nick got the chicken pox so I wore his costume trick-or-treating.

4. 2003...Family of Clowns...Nick, me, Elijah and Emily
