Apples, Apples, Apples

Up at 7:00am, made Elijah french toast and bacon for breakfast and then drove him to school. When I got home I settled in front of the fire with a cup of coffee and the paper.

At 9:00am it still looks like this out the window so guess what happened? That's right...with the combination of reading, hot fire and darkness I feel asleep in the chair by the fire. So much for getting a jump on the day.

I was asked about our daylight hours. Today sunrise was at 10:11am and sunset at 3:54pm for a day length of 5 hours and 43 minutes. The paper also records "civil twilight" and states it was from 9:04am to 5:02pm, but I think this still looks dark to me! (You can almost make out the trees).

After our big sleep in I made Nick french toast, potatoes and bacon. I think the boys are really liking a hot breakfast.

At 1:00pm I decided that I would make pies for the Dessert Auction at Monroe High School as a fundraiser for the athletic program. I am such a procrastinator! I threw the kids in the van and ran to the store for apples.

It is such a grey day in all directions. There were a tiny bit of snow flurries. I took all these on the fly.

I threw some brownies in the oven while I went to work on the apple pies.

It took a lot longer to make four double crust pies than I anticipated. I actually bought apples for eight! I also made Rice Crispy treats. At 5:30pm we raced them down to the school (I was only a half hour late) and then came home for dinner.

We had steak, potatoes with onions and bacon and corn. Very comforting.

Nick is off making tie dye shirts with his girlfriend and Elijah is at the school watching the basketball games (vs Galena). Olivia and Lucas are playing with their toys so Dad and I are settling in to watch Extract (I don't even know what it is about, but it's time to hit the couch!). Still -7F out. Can't wait until it warms up.

Girl, those pies and goodies look great! What a great Mommy you are. :-)

I think you could be mistaken about anyone leaving home, anytime soon. With meals like those, they may never leave. :-)

Wishing you were my neighbor right about now. Those pies look amazing. Good old frosty cold Alaska. I can't say I envy all the darkness...I am finally seeing a smidgen of longer days here. I am still catching up on everyone....lots of reading to do.

You could have a restaurant up there!
Maybe a bakery too.

Beautiful pies. I am going to twist my wife's arm for a huckleberry pie.

I don't think I would like such a long winter, but would totally get over it if someone would cook like that for me all the time! YUM!

Must be hard to get in a full day's activity when the lack of daylight makes you think it's still night.
The apple pies look great!

I don't think I would make it living in Alaska. Too cold and too little sun in the winter.
