Heaven is Crying

Yesterday was a very sad day at The White House. Sophie, our new Nigerian Dwarf, got bloat and was gone before she could be saved. I can’t tell you how many years I have waited to get one and now this. Seems par for our luck. I know life and death are part of farm life, but this is something we were not ready for.
For a moment the sun peeked through the clouds yesterday morning and I went to work moving rocks and planting a bush (of which I didn’t take any photos). This makes me let out a big sigh. Will be so glad when the day comes that sheds and garages are done, and “stuff” doesn’t litter my yard. It’s going to be so much fun picking it all up in the rain.

That was yesterday. Today much more yellow. Snow is fast approaching and I am far behind.

This morning Olivia and I picked the last of the cucumbers. We have 69 pounds to slice and jar. Seems like a good project considering it is raining and 45* outside, but the truth is I really should be out there cleaning before I’m doing it in snow. Too much for one adult and one six-year old, but we’ll give it our best shot! :) (Emily’s got parties to go to, Nick’s working, Elijah is Elijah with friends and Lucas is Lucas with an Xbox). Have I mentioned lately how much Olivia rocks?!

We need to run to the store and see if the onions made it. You see, living in Alaska comes with its perks. Like when a bridge in Canada washes out our trucks of produce don’t make it and the bins in the stores are literally empty. Not an apple to be found. (Not at Fred Meyer anyhow). I also need a lot more jars….I didn’t realize there were so many cucumbers hiding behind the leaves.

That is so sad about sophie. How did the kids take it? Are they ok? That is a LOT of cucumbers! That's more cucumbers than I see on the shelf at the grocery store. I made a batch of peach mango jelly today (6 jars) and I thought I was rocking it! LOL. Not compared to you tho. You WAY out-do me every time. Sigh. I could never keep up with you.
