ABC Wednesday: G

Thanks to Mrs. Nesbitt for bringing us ABC Wednesday.
G is for glasses.

Back on July 17 Olivia got her first pair of glasses.

This whole ordeal was far harder for me than it was for her.

Of course, we all want our children to be perfect. At some point I noticed Olivia's left eye was crossing. I thought it was because she was tired. When it happened more frequently at all times of the day I knew something was wrong and made an eye appointment. It seems the vision in her left eye is a -5...everything is a blur. Her brain began ignoring the blurry eye and was only using the clear eye causing it to become lazy and cross. Olivia now has glasses with one thick lens to see and one clear lens on the other side. Every other day I have to put drops in her "good eye" to make it blurry. This forces her brain to use the "bad eye" in hopes the vision can repair itself. I absolutley HATE putting the drops in her eye. She completely freaks out because it makes her world blurry. I would, too. When her glasses were done Daddy picked them up and this is Olivia trying them on for the first time. I didn't let her see me, but I cried so hard. I didn't want them on her pretty little face...she didn't look like my little Tweeters. It's been a few months now and it seems as if she has always had glasses. They are a pain...they seem to always be dirty (she's 3, of course they are) and they fall down. She will not let the technician look at her or touch her to adjust them (big stranger phobia) so I'll have to get one of those bands around the back to hold them up. I'll probably cry again.

See the pretty Disney Princess glasses case?
Daddy helps get them out...

putting the glasses on for the first time.

I did it! I can see!

Not so sure about them...waiting for Mom's reaction.

(Doesn't she look like Governor Palin in the above photo?)

Of course, I told her how wonderful she looked
and out came the smiles!

Then I cried when she couldn't see me.

For everyone who wants to tell me to be thankful this is Olivia's only health problem....I am thankful. That still doesn't mean I'm not sad for her. Glasses are annoying. They will fog up all winter. Little brother (he's 2) rips them off her face and bends them. She can't take a break from wearing them or the eye immediately crosses. Her eye could get worse and permanently cross. Yes, I am so thankful Olivia is healthy...that still doesn't mean this doesn't suck.

Awwwee Gayle, I feel your pain for her. And she does look beautiful...and like Sarah Palin!
My niece had that too....but she had to patch her good eye every night for like 4 hours after school to correct it.

You have an awful pretty young girl there. Hopefully everything will progress well for her. Our son had vision issues in third grade when through glasses, finally this year (13yrs) he was able to get the extensive wear contact lens. He really likes them and was so happy to be able to wear them. Good luck with Olivia.
Nice photos and a great posting.

I think she is much prettier than your governor. It's hard to have anything wrong with our perfect children. But she is beautiful with her glasses...

She's such a beautiful little girl the glasses don't distract from that at all. I understand about them being a pain in the butt though...My husband is always losing his and they're always filthy...I hope her vision corrects itself so she can get rid of them before she gets older.
P.s. I would have cried too.

Gayle...my nephew had a "lazy" eye when he was a child and went through some of this stuff. His eyes have become good enough for him to go to Iraq for a couple of rounds. Olivia is adorable and she seems to have adapted. It's ok to cry. Great photographs, by the way.

hi gayle, she looks really sweet. i'm surprised they didn't go for the elastic straight off the bat until she's used to them.
my boy has a condition called sticklers syndrome which affects sight and hearing dramatically. as a consequence he's had to wear glasses with elastic around since he was 15 months old!
he'll be 4 in november. 2 weeks ago he got his propper big boy ones". he loves wearing glasses because his mummy and daddy wear them (though his 2 brothers have perfect eyesight) and everyone is constantly telling him how cute he looks.
you don't plan for things like this, but it's part of who they are and it's up to us to help them deal with it.
love and prayers...

Both of my daughters have to wear glasses. Michelle since she was 5. I know what you mean, it was so hard for me to see her wear glasses when she was so little. It seemed as if it were my failing. She, on the other hand, loves them. I've asked if she would like us to get her lasik (sp?) surgery so she wouldn't have to wear glasses any more since she is 18 and she looked at me like I was crazy.
My younger daughter got her glasses last year, she's 15 now, and she is so petite and it's like the glasses have engulfed her face. I love my girls, I think they are beautiful with or with out the glasses and I know it's no big deal, but still...I can't help thinking that I caused it in some way.
Your little one is beautiful! And that smile after she put those glasses on? Heart meltingly beautiful!
Hang in there, it'll get better.

you know, this made me remember when I first got glasses. I was older then Olivia, around first or second grade...I didnt want glasses. At all....then the dr. put them on....I remember with amazement the clarity of things. I saw things I had never noticed before. The whole drive home I looked at the world in wonder. Yes they are a pain and a hassle. But wow to see! I am happy for her and for you. I am also sorry.

Your daughter is adorable. Really adorable. I feel for her. I have had two pairs of glasses in 3 years, and can not wear them at all. I can't see with them and I can't see without them. I don't know what my problem is.
I am visiting from PW site. Really enjoyed my visit.

I think she looks adorable in her glasses!! And that smile on her face says it all....

I wouldn't presume to tell you not to feel sad because your child has glasses, but I will say what I was told when I was not wanting to wear mine: It doesn't make you any less perfect, but it does make you that much more special.
