Everything Changes

I found this photo on my camera. It was taken July 21st at 1:51pm. We kicked the ball back and forth for an hour without a care in the world. Twelve hours later Elijah had his accident. So quickly everything changes.

Here are the sunflowers on that day.

077

Here they are 13 days later. So quickly everything changes.

097

I’d been waiting all summer for my nasturtiums to bloom.

080

They were waiting for me when I got  home.

132

I love all the bright, happy colors.

130

A box of dirt?

083

Nope. Spinach.

121

Emily and my experiment worked. The onions are growing in the hard clay. This was two weeks ago. They are actually much bigger. I’ll add some compost this fall and next summer we should have great success.

088

Two weeks ago Emily had one cucumber in her greenhouse. Now she has six.

090

When I left I had just a few flowers on the pea vines. Today they are covered in pods.

The lawn is mine therefore I maintain it. When I got home the Johnny Jump-Ups were growing in the grass. (Now I totally get why my mom grew to hate this flower. It’s a weed for sure).

103

There were mushrooms everywhere. More than I could handle so I set to mowing. It took several hours to just weed whack and mow the front yard. I haven’t even got to the ditch yet. Ran out of gas and can’t see to remember to take the gas can with me to town. Kind of along the lines of me burning six pizzas the other night. I guess I just have a lot on my mind.

104

Ack! That makes me nuts!

105

Much better, but in serious need of fertilizer. I’m pretty sure I talked about doing that right before the accident. Now it is so yellow.

106

107

108

Emily is helping me demonstrate how wild and over-grown my greenhouse is.

109

110

Tomatoes should be in cages. Period. Zucchini should be grown outside. Period. Yes, there was an aisle once upon a time. It took me a few days to find the energy to tackle this job.

111

And I’ll share that later…..it isn’t currently raining which means I need to get outside and get to work. Winter is just around the corner and I don’t want to get caught like the grasshopper. It was supposed to be 30* in the low lying areas last night. It’s just plain chilly out now.

Gayle!!!!! Your gardens and greenhouse....splendiferous! You have some green thumb and everything kept growing while you were taking care of your son. WOW.

Cucumbers....slice thin, put in jar with onions and fresh dill. Make a brine out of vinegar, water and sugar. Bring to boil and let cool...pour into jar. Last in frig for quite awhile. Better than pickles. (one part vinegar / 2 parts water...a couple tablespoons of sugar) Try it.

What are the containers (right after the pea vines)? Very pretty, but I can't identify what the container is.

It's so true that life can change in an instant. I can recall a few before and after times in our family.
Your greenhouse has turned into a jungle!
