Camera Critters: Woodchuck

See more critters here!

Awhile back I walked out into the yard and my furry friend was sitting on the woodpile.

He was kind enough to wait for me to go back in the house to get my camera.

Perfectly still, pretending to be invisible, I was able to get pretty darn close for some shots.

"Hey, lady, are you looking at me?"

I have previously posted my little friend who I was sure was an Alaska Marmot, but I guess it isn't so. Or so I'm told. I've researched many sites and found lots of conflicting stuff, but in the end I have to go with Woodchuck aka Groundhog due to the area of Alaska I am in.

I think he's just beautiful, and thought he'd be interesting to have around. Mr. White wanted to shoot him. I wouldn't let him, but now after more research I find that one or two of these little buggers can wipe out a garden over night. He just doesn't seem so cute anymore. He may have to enter the relocation plan because I'm not interested in planting his next meal.

"Okay, lady. Enough is enough. I'm outta here".

Great photos. If he lived in a pile of rocks would he be a rock chuck? I can never tell the difference.

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Sorry couldnt help it with him sitting on the wood and all!

He is one cute little woodchuck, he doesn't look like the marmots I've seen. Great shots, it was nice of him to hang around for all the photos.

A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Great photos!

Wonderful clear shots of him. He does look cute but you put in too much hard work on your garden for him to go and wreck it. I hope you can relocate him rather than shooting though!

Wow! You were able to get really close! We've had some trouble with groundhogs from time to time. Last year, they (we had a pair) would wait till my coneflower buds were just about to open, then chomp the blooms right off. I never would have guessed they were responsible had I not seen them standing up on their hind legs to reach the tall stems! They didn't come back this year, and I wonder if they angered someone else to the point of taking action. Relocation sounds like a good plan.
