Lots of Sunshine!

Yesterday the weather was beautiful! It was somewhere in the 70's! Woohoo! Little Miss Olivia loves to help Mommy in the garden/greenhouse. Here she is transplanting some tomatoes.

I finally got my act together and started watering the heck out of the lawn to get some green growing. I won't be burning the other half as we now have a burn ban in effect for our area. It is so very dry! Some asked why I burn. Um...ahhhh...because my mother did. Is that a good enough answer? Really, she did. That's how it was done while I was growing up so I can't even resist the urge to do it myself. The whole concept is to get rid of that dead grass and have a green lawn sooner. I mean, we only have a few months of summer in the first place. One guy told me he thatched his lawn, but tore it up badly. Now this year I can see which side looks better faster and that is what I'll do next year! :)

Yesterday (in between packing plants to the greenhouse) I raked and raked and raked. There will be vegetables gardens in front of the greenhouse soon).

So many teenagers have jobs. I suppose there is a good argument that it teaches them responsibility, etc, but you know, I hate seeing teens work. My dad started working at a very young age by no choice of his own. When I was young he always told me to enjoy being a kid (ride bikes, play softball....) because I have the rest of my life to work. I carry the same philosophy into my parenting. I suppose Nick could work all day and then spend all night with his friends OR he can spend all day with me and all night with his friends. I like that idea a lot more. Soon enough he'll go off on his own and I will miss the clank of skateboards while I rake gravel. Besides, he's a really great guy and I like hanging out with him.

At 9:30 last night (right before bed) we took a little 4-wheeler ride. Those three could ride for hours! Isn't the sun great that time of night? Love it!
We're starting off with sunshine again today. Supposed to be in the 70's. Homer will be attending his daughters sixth grade celebration ceremony, and Grandma Debbi has offered to take the Wee People so I can really work hard in the yard. It's gonna be a great day so I'd better get moving.

How does your garden grow?

You amaze me. Where do you get your energy for all that planting, raking, etc. Also, thanks for explaining why you burn the lawn. Makes sense to me.

Also, how does one get used to going from it being dark practically all day to being light most of the day?

Your flowerbeds look so beautiful! Can't wait to see them with plants.
I've always felt the same way about my daughters working. I had to start working at age 12 because of family circumstances. Since it was illegal in Ct. to work before you were 16 (in some cases 15) I did housecleaning jobs that my mother found for me.
I didn't allow Michelle to get a job until she had finished her Jr. year of high school. She had been begging since she turned 16 but I just didn't want her to have to try and do schoolwork and work-work at the same time. I am keeping the same rule in place for Katy. She will be 16 this summer and she wants a job, too. Why do they want to hurry things? This time of their life is going to go so fast! Like you, I want them to enjoy the heck out of every minute of it.

Gayle!! I don't want Jared (or Carson) to have to get a job this summer either! 16 years old...enjoy it while you can....they have years of work ahead of them. I don't get the rush on that, unless you really really needed the money. Glad to hear it!
PS...we don't burn our grass, but we do burn the grass that gets too tall around the garden fences and stuff like that. Im curious to see how quick it comes back. Ours is green in some places, but dry and dead looking in others. hmmmm
